Types of Cabinet Facings

Types of Cabinet Facings

When beginning to compare kitchen cabinets, the first thing to decide is if you want painted or natural wood cabinets. Next, start looking at door styles and different types of cabinet facings. Therefore, the type of door you choose has the potential to have an even bigger impact on your kitchen than the style you choose.

Shaker

Very simple and lending to a clean design, the shaker style is probably the hottest trend indoors right now. Furthermore, they are often built inset and look fantastic in natural wood or painted. While white was the prevailing choice, light grey and natural wood are appearing more and more. As a result, shaker cabinets lend just enough style to the design without being overly fancy.

Glass

Typically you’ll find one or two upper cabinets with glass doors used with mostly wood ones. Mixing types is a huge trend right now. Also, they’re used to showcase prized possessions like china or any other items you enjoy. With glass, you don’t have to hide away your China in a dark cabinet. One effect that makes a nice touch is to use them and to add a light to the inside of the cabinet. You can also use them as accent lighting.

Beadboard

Beadboard got its start as a popular option for cabinets. They are an easy decorative addition to millwork that’s being made on-site. Since its early adoption, it’s only become more popular. You’ll find it in a lot of traditional kitchens including craftsman and seaside-styled homes.

We not only want it to be right, but we want it to be right for YOU!

Decorative backsplash rack

Backsplash racks offer easy access and stylish storage. Most versions take just a few minutes to install. Type “backsplash rack” into any online search engine to find a range of styles. You’ll also find a range of prices (up to $60 per foot!).

Try an island before you buy

If you want more counter and storage space, then adding a center island may be worth the cost. But an island can limit the number of people working in the kitchen, reduce traffic flow to one way with no passing, and make for cramped quarters. Try out an island before committing to one. Slap together a full-scale model out of cardboard or plywood and live with it for a few days. Make sure you can open your stove and refrigerator doors. No space for an island? Consider a kitchen trolley instead.

4 Reasons to Renovate an East Tennessee Home

In East Tennessee, every season is renovation season! There are many different reasons that you may decide to renovate. Here are four common reasons for renovating an East Tennessee home.

1 – Avoid Selling and Moving

Selling your existing home and buying a new home can have various expenses. However, it shouldn’t be a big hassle. If you like the neighborhood you are in and simply need some additional features to meet your current needs, consider renovating instead. From small changes to big ones, there is so much that you can do. Start by outlining your needs, and then meet with us to discuss ideas for accomplishing those goals.

2 – Increase Your Home’s Value

Home renovations are a great way to increase the value of your home. You can make equity-building changes to the existing footprint or expand to add more space. New features and additional square footage will directly impact your home’s market value. Ask us about which renovations may provide the greatest return on investment in the form of increased equity.

3 – Prepare to Sell

If you have an older home and are thinking about selling, you will be competing against much newer homes in the area. Will you be able to compete? Home renovations can help level the playing field by adding highly desirable home buyer features. Our team understands the current market trends and can offer suggestions on renovations that make the most sense.

4 – Modernize Outdated Design

Older homes are given new life with renovation projects to modernize old features. Modern updates are one of the most popular reasons to renovate a Tennessee home. From kitchens to baths and pools, your finishes can become aged over time. Beyond the normal wear and tear, the style may no longer be desirable compared to today’s options. Renovating to modernize can be equally beneficial to adding rooms and features that do not exist.

Other Reasons to Renovate an East Tennessee Home

Do you have another reason to renovate an East Tennessee home? At DBI Kitchen and Bath, we work with all types of projects, big and small. Please call to schedule a consultation with our team to discuss your plans. We can offer creative solutions and provide thoughtful options for you to consider.

2022 Colors of the Year

2022 Colors of the Year

This is almost like a holiday season for those in the housing industry; it’s time of year when major paint companies introduce their Colors of the year. It adds a little bit of extra joy sprinkled in with the incoming spring weather. And it’s exciting because we get to see how these colors will influence interiors over the next few years as well!

Color Experts

These hand-picked paints come from color experts in the field. More often than not, they influence kitchen and bath trends. Designers love when homeowners gravitate towards new colors for a fresh perspective on their space. In the past we have seen grays, yellows, and even turquoise back in ‘06.

To make it easy, we’ve compiled a list of the top forecasted colors for 2022 to help inspire your home interior journey!

Color Forecast!

The top forecasted colors for 2022 include, Behr – Breezeway, Benjamin Moore – October Mist, Pittsburgh Paints – Olive Sprig, Valspar – Blanched Thyme, Glidden – Guacamole, Farrow & Ball – Breakfast Room Green, Sherwin Williams – Evergreen Fog, Akzo Nobel – Bright Skies, Farrow & Ball – Stone Blue, Valspar – Mountain River, and Valspar – Orchid Ash.

Colors of the Year

In recent years, Colors of the Year have been heavily influenced by blue-grays. Considering recent color trends in cabinets, we’re not surprised to see that greens are now making a big splash. By grouping these colors into categories, we can more easily talk about them in-depth.

Fresh Shades of Green

The strong influence of greens – like Breezeway, October Mist, Olive Sprig, and Evergreen Fog – are cool and fresh. These greens are usable as long-term, neutral colors anywhere in the home. They are also stunning choices for cabinetry. If shades of white or cream are in your home’s overall color palette, these greens will work great to add a pop of color.

Spectrum of Blues

Some of the colors of the year still do fall into the blue family, which we know has been very popular in cabinetry for the last five years. Orchid Ash, Bright Skies, Stone Blue and, Mountain River show how the blue tones are evolving into 2022. This broader spectrum of blues is very useable and showcases why blue has become a mainstream staple in the home.

What To Look For When Hiring a Remodeling Contractor

What To Look For When Hiring a Remodeling Contractor

Are you thinking of renovating your old kitchen or redecorating your bathroom to finally install that flooring you have always wanted? Whether the work to be done in your home is big or small, it is always advisable to know what to look for when hiring a remodeling contractor. By hiring a professional, you can avoid making potential mistakes that could cost you a fortune to fix. If you are looking for a professional to get your dream kitchen and bathroom, here’s a list of the top five things to look for in a kitchen and bathroom contractor.

1. License

When reviewing potential contractors, the first thing you should do is look for proper licenses and necessary documents. This can help you narrow down your search from several contractors to a few licensed professionals carrying valid credentials. A good contractor should be able to produce a copy of their license and those of the major subcontractors they routinely work with.

2. Insurance

It is essential that you ask your contractor for proof of insurance to find out whether they come with general liability and worker’s compensation. In fact, having this indicates that any damage or incident occurring during the project is covered by insurance.  This way the homeowner will not held liable for any particular situation.

3. Fixed location

With big renovations, you want to make sure that you are complying with city ordinances or requirements and permits that the city requires. Thus, you will want a contractor that has a history of working in your general area.  This way you can breathe easier knowing that they have complied with safety and other regulations. Also, it helps to have them in a nearby location so that they can come by quickly in case of emergency adjustments.

4. References

Don’t be afraid to ask about their past work and past client’s references. This looks like speaking to previous clients to find out if they are pleased with the contractor’s work.  Then, if they have good things to say, it means you can be assured that you have found an experienced contractor.  All this is leading to a contractor or builder who will go above and beyond to do justice to your project. This is good assurance that you will be satisfied.

5. Years of service

Does your contractor have the experience necessary to meet the scope of the project? It is vital to know that a contractor has an excellent reputation as it is a very valuable asset. Furthermore, a contractor with years of experience will have worked with projects similar to yours before.  This means getting the necessary plans and materials for a final product of a high standard.

Dream kitchen exercise

dream kitchen exercise.

One of the many benefits of a home is that the kitchen can be perfectly tailored to support how you cook and entertain. A first step to getting that result can be this dream kitchen exercise.

When doing this exercise, forget about preconceived notions like the “work triangle,” a concept that dates to the 1940s and defines placement of the range, sink and refrigerator. The work triangle assumes just a single cook.  Nowadays, custom homebuyers want kitchens big enough for multiple cooks that double as gathering spaces.

imagine a meal.

That being said, one must think through exactly how the kitchen needs to work for this dream kitchen exercise. Some designers suggest imagining the steps needed to prepare a meal—a fun activity you can do alone or with your other half.

That imaginary meal can be as elaborate as you want, but something as simple as spaghetti can help clarify what works for you. Where are the most convenient locations for pots, knives and spices? What steps will you take to prepare the meal and get it on the table?

This exercise will help you visualize the best places for just about everything. If one cook will be making sauce while another chops vegetables, you’ll want a layout that keeps you from crowding one another while working together efficiently. The exercise can even get you thinking about specific details: for instance, if one person is 6’2″ and the other 5’3″, you might decide on two different counter heights.

There’s no need to sweat over triangles, but it can be helpful to think in terms of zones. An efficient kitchen will have zones for wet work, socializing, cooking and food storage.

Wet zone: Decisions here include the dishwasher location and the sink type. If the dishwasher will be next to the sink, putting it on the left will be easier for a right-handed person and on the right for a left-handed person. (Most righties hold a plate with their left hand while scraping or rinsing it with their right; they can then put the plate in the dishwasher without twisting or turning.)

As for the sink, a double basin is the most typical. However, a deep single bowl is becoming a popular choice as well! A good design tip: a sink with the drain at the back will leave more usable space in the cabinet below.

Social zone:

If your kitchen will have an island, don’t put a sink on it. Instead, reserve the island for seating and entertaining. This is also a popular spot for a cooktop, as it lets the chef talk with guests or family members. Good task lighting is essential, and the space below the counter is perfect for a cookbook shelf.

Cooking zone:

It’s fine to put wall ovens and cooktops on opposite ends of the kitchen, but you want to store cookware close to where it will be used—for instance, baking pans near the oven and large pots near the cooktop. Remember that while cabinets offer more storage volume, drawers are more accessible.

Food zone:

Think about making the refrigerator and pantry easily accessible (and viewable) from the food prep area. The ability to see the contents of the pantry and fridge while standing in one place will reduce the time you spend hunting for ingredients.

It’s a good idea to do this dream kitchen exercise evaluating how you’ll use the space before worrying about things like cabinet styles and colors. That’s the best way to get a kitchen that’s beautiful and functional.

Knobs & Pulls

Knobs & Pulls

One of my favorite details of a home is the knobs and pulls for cabinetry. These fine details are really like putting the right bow on a gift. They are also a fantastic way to express yourself as a homeowner, designer, or business establishment. Details of expression are often preferred as full themes can come off as too permanent. Something small like a knob can give way to pops of color or fun shapes without overtaking the vibe. Let’s talk about some of the different styles trending right now.

Modern, streamlined hardware styles are still going strong and appear to be sticking around.  People are using designs that can withstand changing themes, but the are also playing with placement locations.  Current styles trending are a combination of minimalistic and mid century modern. Here are current design trends in cabinet hardware, as well as a few roundups of what people are actually buying. It’s interesting to see where they overlap; homeowners aren’t exactly buying into the same trends as interior designers.

Cabinet Hardware Trends of 2022

  1. Minimalistic Styles
  2. Spanish Pulls
  3. Combo pulls on uppers knobs on bottoms
  4. Cylinder Bar Pulls
  5. Square Bar Pulls
  6. Pearl and Iridescent Knobs
  7. No pulls/knobs
  8. Matte Black
  9. Brass or Gold toned
  10. Centered Placement

What Have We Learned?

We are happy to help guide you in choosing your hardware. Or if you have an eye for design and already have some in mind, that works for us too! If you haven’t already purchased your knobs or pulls just run your idea by us to double check they are compatible for your cabinetry. Granite vs. Quartz

Granite vs. Quartz

When planning a kitchen or bath remodel with our clients we get a lot of question about granite vs quarts. Both options are great depending on your kitchen use and personal needs. Let us outline some key differences and similarities between the two to help you make you decision.

GRANITE

A large number of homeowners plan to use Granite countertops when they renovate. This is understandable when you consider that granite countertops are durable in addition to being beautiful and that this installation increases the value of their home. This is pertinent when choosing granite vs quartz. Available in slabs and smaller tiles, usually 12” by 12”, the tiles are designed for use on floors, but their smaller size makes them a good choice for DIY projects.  Granite comes in a variety of colors with unique veining and is perfect for countertops, walls, backsplashes, fireplace surrounds, vanities, tubs and shower surrounds.

Pros:

  • Very durable
  • Naturally stain resistant
  • Easy to care for, but regular sealing required
  • Bacteria resistant
  • Heat resistant
  • Wide range of unique colors and patterns that occur organically

Cons:

  • Can have naturally occurring design imperfections
  • Regular sealing will help maintain its appearance
  • May be difficult to match veining if you need more than one slab

QUARTZ

As for quartz, more than 93% of a Quartz countertop is made of natural quartz crystals. Quartz crystals are one of the hardest minerals found in nature making this an excellent material for durability. Another major key when making the decision granite vs quartz. It also is an eco-friendly choice since quartz is a plentiful mineral that impacts nature less than granite.  With lots of choices of color and pattern, quartz is available to match any kitchen or bath. Quartz is perfect for countertops, vanities, backsplashes, tub surrounds and showers.

Pros:

  • Wide range of colors
  • Scratch resistant surface, slightly harder than granite
  • Easy to maintain – no sealing needed
  • Bacteria resistant
  • Large slabs allow for more coverage and fewer seams
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Uniform color and appearance
  • Stain resistant
  • Heat resistant

Cons:

  • Best-suited for interior use
  • UV light can damage the appearance and color

Now that you know a bit more about the differences and similarities between granite and quartz, you can make an informed choice when you update your living space. As you can see, they both will make a lovely addition to your home.
